Monday afternoon I headed back to Nanaimo after touring a bunch more of the Courtenay area. In all I spent about 12 hours driving around to various places. One of the interesting ones was on Sunday night where I found a folk festival in the town of Cumberland, just outside Courtenay. Cumberland was important to me because that was the place I scored my first league basketball point while on a school team. Number 21 was my jersey number, if I recall correctly. Anyway, hippies are alive and well on the Island. Interestingly enough, the number of old men with pony tails really escalates on the island. They're everywhere. Grey hair and all! I did not recognize the band, Michael Franti & Spearhead, so I asked what kind of music it was. Apparently he does, and I quote, "Politically correct hip hop and funk, with a twist of reggae" Now, politically correct according to whom? Politicians? Greenpeace? Heck, they've probably got as many people in jail as Hell's Angels! How often do you get to be called 'landed gentry'?
