Database Monitoring

What is database monitoring? It is the process where we check to make sure that the database is running at peak efficiency. Peak efficiency here means that users are getting back their results in the fastest possible times given the current situation. Obviously you will have less competition for resources when you are the only person on the system on a Saturday morning than when you are one of 150 people trying to get that last order filled on a Thursday evening. It is the job of a good DBA (database administrator) to make the most of both situations so that even when the system is heavily loaded you are still getting reasonable response times.

What kinds of things are being looked at when you are monitoring a database?

  • Maintaining sound backup and recovery policies and procedures

  • Creating and maintaining users, roles and assigned privileges

  • Database tuning and related performance monitoring

  • Maintaining documentation and standards

  • Planning for growth and change (capacity planning)

Ultimately, we are looking here at the most efficient, productive use of the database in a vast array of hardware that connects through networks and associated hardware to bring the user information that is worthwhile and timely.
