WWII Dover Castle
One of the bigger interest points about Dover Castle is its
involvement in WWII. This was probably one of the easiest targets for
the Germans as it was the closest to continental Europe.
Way back in times of yore there were tunnels built in to the soft
chalk cliffs of Dover. These cliffs are exceedingly soft. How soft? I
could dig out a divet with my fingernail. Very, very soft.
The outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 saw the tunnels converted
first into an air-raid shelter and then later into a military command
centre and underground hospital. In May 1940, Admiral Sir Bertram
Ramsey directed the evacuation of French and British soldiers from
Dunkirk, code-named Operation Dynamo, from his headquarters in the
cliff tunnels.
