I will admit that to me Pompeii was a bit of a bust. Ruins, just on a much larger scale, a whole town instead of just a building or a castle. From what I understand, the town next door that also suffered the same fate, Herculaneum is more touristy in approach, kind of like the difference between Jasper and Banff, Jasper is for the hiker purist. But I saw it, I have pictures of it, and I saw Vesuvius. Tried to drive up it, but apparently they lock up the mountain on weekdays. But first we had to get there, so we took the slow winding route, which featured a drive down the Autostrade, which technically has a maximum speed limit of 130 km/hr, but yet as I was doing 200 km/hr was still getting passed. Those little Fiat Punto's go like snot. We were in an Opel stationwagon with a diesel engine. Man could that thing pull. And the mileage, considering that I was doing a lot of 160+ driving, averaged 41 mpg. Not bad I am figuring! So we headed south, then meandered over to Gaeta for a little ocean scenic photo op shot, then carried on to Pompeii.
