In 1070 Abbot Scolland became the first Norman abbot of St
Augustine's. The buildings of the existing Saxon monastery had
been extended haphazardly,a nd some were several centuries old.

Scolland discussed plans with the Pope to rebuild the abbey, and
work on the new church started almost immediately. This took a
number of years to complete and Scolland died in 1087 before
	the church was finished.
