The abbey was founded by St Augustine in 598, following the success of his evangelical mission from Rome by King Ethelbert of Kent. The abbey buildings were then completely reconstructed in the years following the Normal Conquest. After the Dissolution where Henry VIII got rid of all monasteries so that he could be absolute in power, most of the buildings were destroyed, although some portions were converted into a royal palace.
If you look at this picture from the late 1800s, notice where the ground level is at and you will see that the church had been buried beneath a lot of dirt, as only the upper arch was visible.
