Warren's London-based Adventures

So, on Sunday we headed off to the East, First stop, Rochester, it was on
the route, that's the only reason I chose it. It had an old castle, and
they're all old, right? And it had a church beside it. This church was
originally build back in 1066as part of the Norman plot to make castles.
Wooden forts didn't last too long so eventually they built the stone one
that we visited in 1127. So it really isn't *that* old, at least by
German standards (dig dig).

And here's the castle keep!

The only interesting thing about this shot is that the tower (end
turret) is round, not square like the rest of the castle's walls.
That's because in a fight with King John trying to get rid of
insurgents who were opposing him as king after the signing of the
Magna Carta in 1215, he couldn't break in to the castle so he dug
underneath this corner, bracing the tunnel with wood, and then
burned the wood so that the tower collapsed under its own weight.
It was rebuilt as a round one of the current time.
